How to Protest Your Property Taxes in Texas

(and Win)

Texas property taxes can be steep — and they don’t always reflect reality. The good news? You have the right to protest your property tax appraisal and potentially lower your bill.

Steps to Protest Your Property Taxes:

  • Each spring, you’ll receive a notice from your county appraisal district. Check the appraised value carefully.

  • Look up similar properties in your area. If your value is higher than comparable homes, that’s a strong case for protest.

  • Photos of needed repairs, estimates from contractors, or listings of lower-priced homes nearby all help your case.  Don’t waste time on things that are less than $1K.

  • Deadlines are strict — usually within 30 days of receiving your appraisal notice.

The money you save will cover the expense of hiring someone. Shop around to find a service that only charges you IF you receive a reduction, taking a small percentage of that savings—around 25% to start. It's a win-win situation!

Pro Tip: Get estimates for windows, roofing, or even foundation repairs. Requesting an estimate does not obligate you to proceed with the work until you're ready. Plus, you'll have EVIDENCE to support your decision! :)

  • Present your case clearly. Many homeowners win reductions simply by showing solid comparisons. (But if you hire a company to do it, you will receive the update via email, and your life goes on smoothly)

At Wi-Go Homes, we’ve seen how much relief this can bring homeowners. Lower taxes mean more breathing room in your budget and less stress each year.
